Adult
Periodontal Disease
Millions
of Americans have periodontal disease. It is an infection of the
tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. Without proper care,
this disease can lead to tooth and bone loss. With proper care,
it is possible to have a healthier mouth and prevent tooth loss.
Symptoms
of Periodontal Disease
The
symptoms of periodontal disease are often subtle. However, you may
notice some signs of the disease which include:
Gums
that bleed during brushing or flossing
Red gums
Swollen or tender gum tissue
Bad breath or unpleasant taste that doesn't go away
Pocketing between teeth and gums
Teeth that feel loose, or appear to be shifting
Changes in your bite
Progression
of Periodontal Disease
There
are three stages of periodontal disease: gingivitis, periodontitis,
and advanced periodontitis. With early detection and subsequent
treatment, the disease can be kept from progressing.
GINGIVITIS
Bacteria and plaque left on the teeth cause swelling and bleeding
gums. Plaque that gets in between the teeth and gums causes pockets
to form around the teeth. Good home care and professional cleanings
can help restore healthy gum tissue.
PERIODONTITIS
Higher levels of bacteria release enzymes that destroy tissue. This
causes deeper pocketing and bone loss. Treatment may stop further
bone loss and help to reverse the progression of the disease.
ADVANCED
PERIODONTITIS
At this point, gum tissue and bone have been destroyed even further.
Tooth loss is a possibility.
