Cervical Recession & Abrasion

Many patients show evidence of receding gums, which causes exposure of the roots. Abrasion may also be present, which appears as notching of the roots.

Repeated trauma to the tissue of the mouth can cause damage to the teeth and gums. Switching to a soft bristle toothbrush is not enough to prevent all types of abrasion and recession. The DIRECTION AND AMOUNT OF FORCE are key factors in tooth abrasion and gingival recession. The ABRASIVE used on the teeth and gums is also an issue.

One of the most damaging methods of brushing is the SAWING type of stroke. The down stroke or pulling motion in particular can rapidly destroy tooth and gum tissue.

It is important to prevent further damage. The damaged areas may need to be restored. Tooth cleaning methods must change to prevent continued recession and abrasion. A ROTARY BRUSH can be very effective in cleaning the teeth. A NON-ABRASIVE tooth gel can also be helpful. Changing the BRUSHING METHOD is important.
